What the Pet Stores Don't Tell You

Did you know that 99% of those cute puppies you see in pet store windows are acquired from puppy mills and poor breeders?

Puppy Mills are nothing new. These mass dog-breeding operations have been around for decades and they continue to thrive because they prey on unwitting consumers who are smitten by all those too-cute-for-words puppies in pet store windows and on fancy websites (please read why we protest.)  But behind the friendly facade of the local pet shop, the pastoral scenes on a "breeder's" website, or the neighborhood newspaper ad, there often lies a puppy mill.

Each year millions of companion animals are destroyed through euthanasia due to the greed of commercial puppy mills, the ignorance of Poor/Back Yard Breeders and irresponsible pet owners. New laws, public awareness and compassion will end the suffering of these voiceless creatures.

Puppy Mills and Poor Back Yard Breeders are:

  • are crude, outdoor breeding farms that mass-produce puppies for sale to pet stores, laboratories and animal brokers.
  • focus solely on profit with little or no consideration for the breeding dog's health or welfare.
  • produce puppies with severe health and behavioral issues.
  • are an ever-increasing problem for rescue groups, as well as municipal pounds, humane societies and SPCAs
  • are the greatest cause of pet overpopulation and companion animal euthanasia
  • often a source of grief for those who may own or purchase puppies from such places learn more
